Tips for a pain free holiday

Was your last holiday a pain in the neck? Research from the British Chiropractic Association (BCA) has found that almost half of the nation’s holidaymakers have experienced back or neck pain while on holiday.

Sleeping in a bed with an unfamiliar mattress or pillow were the biggest causes of holiday back or neck pain. While travelling was listed as the next most significant pain trigger, whether by coach, train, car or on a long haul flight.

So if you’re keen for a pain free holiday, make sure you check out these travel tips from the BCA before you go!

Pack wisely

Carrying extra weight puts strain on your body so look for the lightest bag possible on wheels. Four wheels are better than two as they can help further reduce the load on your back. Also, try pushing your case instead of pulling it to prevent your back from twisting.

On the road

If you’re driving, ensure the seat position is slightly reclined. It should feel natural and your elbows should be at a comfortable and relaxed angle. Try to relax at the wheel, as this reduces stress on the spine and allows your seat to take your weight.

Flying high

Remember to get up from your seat and walk around at least every 2 hours. Keep your body active while seated too with simple exercises like shoulder shrugs, buttock clenches and foot circles.

Sweet dreams

If your holiday bed is too hard try putting an additional duvet or blanket between you and the mattress. And make sure your pillows allow your head and neck to rest comfortably while feeling supported.

Stay hydrated

Hot weather means your body requires more water than usual – and as dehydration can exacerbate back or neck pain, remember to drink lots of water to keep your holiday pain free. For tips on how to top up your water intake, see our blog all about keeping hydrated.
