Knee & Leg Pain

Treatment for leg and knee pain in South Bristol

At the Bristol Back Pain Clinic, our chiropractors and osteopaths are experts in assessing, diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions (problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body) including knee pain.

Focus on knee pain

The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in the body. It is made up of 3 bones, 3 compartments, 2 menisci and 4 ligaments as well as cartilage, muscles and tendons. When these individual components are in good working order, the knee functions normally and without pain, but if any one of them is not, the knee joint is unable to function properly which can cause pain. In addition, routine daily activities which place stress on the knee can result in inflammation of the muscles, tendons and ligaments around the joint.

Types of knee pain

Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal issue, experienced by people in all walks of life. It can can be caused as a result of osteoarthritis or degeneration of the joint, tight muscles or sporting activity and can also be felt as referred pain due to foot, ankle or hip problems that can affect your posture and the way your knee is used.

The most common type of knee pain we see in the clinic is knee pain from osteoarthritis. As well as discomfort, patients suffering from knee pain from osteoarthritis often also experience stiffness in the knee, which tends to be worse in the morning after a night’s sleep and eases up with activity.

Treatment for knee pain

Harry Kauntze, chiropractor at The Bristol Back Pain Clinic explains how treatment can help with knee pain: “Identifying the cause of pain and giving our patients a clear understanding of the problem and how we can treat it are the first steps to recovery. Once we have established what the problem is, we are able to use a range of effective treatments for knee pain to provide lasting improvement. These include acupuncture, joint mobilisations or adjustments, stretching and massage techniques, nutritional advice, relaxation techniques, home stretches and exercises. If required we can also order MRI and Xrays to assist diagnosis.

See why patients love Bristol Back Pain Clinic

“My 8 year old son tore some knee ligaments at a trampoline party and Marion was absolutely superb at dealing with the aftermath after NHS had done their thing. With a child it can be tricky to embed the routines required for recovery, but after the first session it was evident that Marion had performed nothing short of a miracle. Her bedside manner was brilliant and my son responded so well to her precise manipulation that he only really needed one more session after that. I cannot recommend Marion highly enough.”

“Professional, friendly and efficient practice. Done wonders with my wonky shoulder and knees.”
