Treatment for hip pain in South Bristol

At the Bristol Back Pain Clinic, our chiropractors and osteopaths are experts in assessing, diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal conditions (problems with the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves of the body) including hip pain.

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint. It is made up of the femoral head (ball) which sits in the acetabulum (socket) as well as articular cartilage, fibrocartilage, ligaments and muscles. It is a weight bearing joint, which enables us to stand upright, walk and run smoothly. In fact the hips are involved in nearly every way we move and as such, issues with the hip joint can cause significant problems for patients.

Types of hip pain

Hip pain can derive from the structures within the hip joint or from the structures and ligaments surrounding the joint. It can also be caused as a result of overuse of the area. In addition, routine daily activities which place stress on the hip can result in inflammation of the muscles, tendons and ligaments around the joint.

Often pain felt in the hip may be referred pain from an issue elsewhere in the body such as the back, while those experiencing pain in the hip as their primary symptom, may also feel discomfort in the thigh, groin and buttocks too. One of the more common types of referred pain when it comes to hip pain is sciatica, or inflammation or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

A relatively common condition we often see in people over the age of 50 is hip pain from osteoarthritis. This is because, over time, wear and tear on the cartilage around the hip joint can cause inflammation or osteoarthritis. Patients who have hip osteoarthritis have pain localised to the groin area and the front or side of the thigh and tend to experience morning stiffness, a limited range of motion of the hip and pain during motion.

Treatment for hip pain

Harry Kauntze, chiropractor at The Bristol Back Pain Clinic explains how we can help patients with hip pain: "Identifying the source of our patients' hip pain and giving them a clear understanding of the problem and how we can treat it are the first steps to recovery. Hip pain is not always felt directly over the hip and often pain you feel in the hip may actually be as a result of a problem elsewhere, rather then in your hip itself. As such, an accurate diagnosis is key to recovery. Once we have established what the underlying problem causing the hip pain is, we are able to use a range of effective treatments for hip pain to provide improvement. These include acupuncture, joint mobilisations or adjustments, stretching and massage techniques, nutritional advice, relaxation techniques, home stretches and exercises. If required we can also order MRI and Xrays to assist diagnosis."
