What to expect after treatment with a chiropractor or osteopath

Chiropractic treatment

At the Bristol Back Pain Clinic, we believe that understanding what happens after your treatment is just as important as knowing what to expect during your appointment. So, whether you’re new to chiropractic or osteopathic care or have had treatment before, please see below for some information on what to expect after your appointment and a few tips on how to help aid recovery post treatment.

How you might feel after an appointment

It’s quite normal to feel a little sore and tired after a session with us, especially if you’re in acute pain and it’s one of your first treatment sessions. This usually peaks within 24 hours and then fades, however if you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to call us on 0117 9723 518.

What you can do to support your body’s response post appointment

Here are some suggestions of things you can do to help support your body’s healing process after an appointment:

  • Stay hydrated: Fluids help flush out toxins and aid in muscle recovery.
  • Keep moving: Avoid staying in one position for longer than 20 minutes – keep moving and stretching as much as possible.
  • Activity levels: Let your body adapt before returning to high level activity or heavy lifting.
  • Rest: Make time for good, regular sleep and rest.

Your treatment plan and what to expect from future appointments

Your treatment plan is designed to get you back to where you want to be as fast as possible. We will always offer what we think will work best for you and keep the plan under review. We want to work with you to meet your expectations and needs, so please share these with us at any point during your care.

There are different phases of care:

  1. The initial Acute Phase is where appointments are at a higher frequency to restore more normal function and movement as quickly as possible thereby decreasing any pain and discomfort you may be experiencing.
  2. The Supportive Phase follows where you are getting more comfortable so we can address and strengthen key underlying issues to help future proof your body for longer lasting change.
  3. The Maintenance Phase is ongoing care at a low frequency for those who want and need us to manage their complaints in the medium to long term. This is especially popular with those who want us to help prevent an issue reoccurring, to optimise physical health and for peace of mind. Please let your practitioner know if you are interested in ongoing care and they can discuss this further with you.

Whatever you chose to do we will endeavour to adjust what we can offer you dependent on individual wants and needs.
